SPYDER MEGA-TOUR 201602 (13)
This Tuesday, May 24, Fred and Cherrie Rau will depart on a 65-day tour of North America on their Can-Am Spyder RT-LE with Freedom Trailer. The plan is to cover at least 30 States and 3 Canadian Provinces in approximately 10,000 miles, visiting various motorcycle and Spyder events along the way, and basically just enjoying the open road. Our basic schedule looks something like this:
May 24-June 3: Ride to Las Vegas and then Reno, Nevada. From Reno we will ride US 50, “The Loneliest Road in America,” to Austin, Eureka and Ely, following much of the old Pony Express Route and retracing a ride we made more than 30 years ago. From Salt Lake City we will ride old Highway 40 to Dinosaur and Steamboat Springs, eventually to Denver to visit some old friends from when we lived there in the 1970s. We expect to be in Denver on May 28-29. From Denver we will ride Highway 36 across Colorado, Kansas and Missouri, again retracing one of earliest-ever cross-country tours which we made on a Honda 750 back in 1977. I will visit Atchison, Kansas, where I was born, and St. Joseph, Missouri, where I grew up (home of the Pony Express and Wells Fargo Stagecoach Line), just down the street from Jesse James’ house. From there we will ride Highway 24 through Illinois and Indiana, then Highway 30 across Ohio and into Pennsylvania. Then Highways 6 and 66 to New York.
June 3-11: Americade! “The World’s Largest Motorcycle Touring Rally” in Lake George, New York, where we will spend eight days giving seminars, leading tours, hosting a fashion show, etc., etc. Always a great time with dozens of old friends.
June 12-15: Laconia, New Hampshire for “Bike Week.” This is one of the few large motorcycle events in the country we’ve never visited, so thought we’d drop in and see what it’s all about.
June 15-24: We have about 10 “free days” here, which we plan on spending exploring a few sights in New England and riding up to Montreal, Ottawa and Old Quebec City. We might just drop in on the folks at BRP in Valcourt, also.
June 25-30: On to Stratton, Vermont, for the Motorcycle Sport Touring Association’s “STAR” National Rally. We always enjoy STAR—the MSTA is full of fanatical riders like ourselves. Again, giving seminars and such.
July 1-10: Again we have some free time, and plan on visiting friends in Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. Our hope is to find some quaint New England village to spend the Independence Day Holiday. We’re looking for a local Fourth Of July Parade with ice cream socials and fireworks!
July 12-16: The BMW Motorcycle Owner’s Association (BMWMOA) International Rally in Hamburg, New York. Always a large, colorful and interesting event, where we will be vendors and giving seminars again. And again, meeting up with lots of old friends.
July 17-??: This is our “Open Road” time. From the end of the MOA Rally we have no plans except to eventually make it back to Southern California. Our route and schedule will be strictly on whim, depending largely on the weather and anything we think we might like to visit. Like our favorite restaurant, Lambert’s Café, in Sikeston, Missouri. But then again, we might head up into the Canadian Rockies or down to Florida!
Open Invitation To One & All – Come and see us at any of the events, or anywhere along the road. If your Spyder or MC club has an event or ride that you think we might be able to fit into our ride, let us know! If we can find a way to make it work, we’ll be there! Email us at any time at:
Or you can just follow along as we demonstrate how easy it can be, and how much fun, to tour the country on a Spyder. We will post updates of our travels and adventures on my Facebook page (Fred Rau) and also on my blog (
